It’s Contest Time

It’s hard now to think of any more preparations needing attention, so all I can say is thanks to all who have entered and to those who have helped make this happen!  I hope to see you all at the Awards Ceremony, Sunday, 6 PM, at Great Basin on Victorian Ave., Sparks.

Calif. State Fair Homebrew Contest

Hey, all you judges, stewards, old, new, or prospective; here’s a message from Darrell Amerine, Coordinator for the California State Fair Homebrewing Competition (p.s., I’m planning on being there):

Good Morning everyone,

The NCBG and the CA State Fair have begun the process of signing up judges and/or stewards to work the week of May 29th – June 1st.  We are looking for about 40 judges and 20 stewards per day to judge and score the nearly 750 expected entries this year.
Please use this link to scroll to the bottom of the page and register as a judge. if you know of someone who would be a steward please forward the link to them as well.
This year promises to be bigger and better than last year.  We will have great food, raffle prizes and can assist people who have to travel more than 50 miles with Hotel Accommodations.
If you are available any or all of the dates on the registration page, please signup so we can have a great list of potential judges.
Judges who can make the trip from out of town, please contact me via email so I can make the Hotel accommodation with you.
Darrell Amerine, Coordinator
CA State Fair Homebrew and Commercial Craft Beer Competitions

Anybody Enter the NHC?

Hey, did anyone out there get entered into the National Homebrewing Contest?

I entered for the first time this year, and it went pretty smooth.  I entered three brews, which I’m not going to say what styles they were, because I’m going to enter the same ones into the Great Basin Brew-Off, and don’t want to show my hand.

The new system they are using seems to work really well.  Did you know that the software is the same as what we use?  Just beefed up for the huge size of the contest, but designed by the same person, Geoff Humphries, of  That guy has helped a lot of us get competitions off the ground.

Anyway, feel free to comment, and let us know if you got through with any entries.
